acoustics - room modes finder m8r - Max for Live Plugin

acoustics - room modes finder m8r - helps you to find and identify exact frequencies of standing waves / room modes in your studio room - by ear and VU Meter. It is especially useful for bass / low frequencies.

1. Enable audio in on your track

2. Attach a measurement microphone (normal mics will do for test purposes)

3. Set sinewave to ON

4. Change the volume if necessary

5. Change the model of the VU Meter if necessary

6. Shift through the frequency up from 1 to 20k -> you hear loud peaks where the room modes / standing waves are. Note any peaks you find temporarily in the Notes field.

That's it.

Audio treatment of m8r Home Studio - Part 2

I 'd like to share some thoughts with whilst investigating the possibilities to treat my home studio acoustically:

  1. It's not rocket science, but complex enough. Helmholtz Resonators, Basotect, Plate absorbers, all of those need careful reading, some maths, and if you don't want to spend a lot of cash, quite some time to build.
  2. Professional work costs money, so if you want to treat professional, you have to pay professional.
  3. There are many self-called pro's which basically turn facts around here and there, but know not more than you do.
  4. All about trial and error: Build, try, rebuild, retry.

----------------------

Room Details:

The room is 5.4 x 3.2 x 2.5 m2.

Standing wave is at 80hz, normal room echo above 100hz

Tannoy Active Loudspeakers System 600a, no subwoofer yet.

I need it for composing electronic music with ableton live, and teaching (skype & in room).

3 concrete walls (painted bricks), 1 window front (behind loudspeakers), few furniture.

-----------------------

Proposal of treatment:

- 10m2 Helmholtz Resonators, 100x100x10cm times x. They will have holes on the reso plate, below 1% of cover.

- 5m2 of Basotect, some plates of 10cm x 100cm x 150cm.

Do you have any other tipps? Would you do it differently?

Please let me know!

Audio Treatment of m8r Home Studio - Part 1

I have been asked many times why I don't treat my studio acoustically. The reason is simple: it wasn't a priority. Moving forward with this, I have attached the following links and tipps in an excel file.

- A lisf of cheap basotect foam vendors (germany)

- Formulas and links for helmholtz resonators

- Formulas and links to room calculation programs

- Calculation of my room measurements

----------------------------

Stay tuned! :)

pitchbomb m8r 1.0

Pitchbomb is a tool to attach the speed of Ableton Live Midi tracks to Audio tracks. This may sound unspectacular, but allows previously impossible tape stops and speed ups.

The speciality of this one is that you shift midi up and down at the same time as you pitch the audio, a feature which is not implemented in Live as for now.

How to:

  • Add Pitchbomb amxd to any (Midi) track in the Ableton set.
  • Put an audio clip to Repitch mode in clip settings. They need to match pitch-wise, so you might have to bounce your audio. Percussive stuff like drums can be left in their Drums/Complex/etc mode.
  • Add a Midi tracks with synths and match their pitch to the existing audio clips at the given song tempo - Add a Live "Pitch" plugin to the Midi track
  • Click "Learn" in Pitch target 1 and click the Live "Pitch" plugins Pitch knob
  • Start fiddling with the semitone change field and do semitone target semitone & bang transitions

Ander - Live Performance - Grundton @ Hive - Zürich 6.8.2011

The perfomance of Ander opened my eyes - again. Since the beginning of my controllerism freakism, I wanted to touch every parameter of my music live.

Ander does just that, plus more: He builds his custom light controllers, see here: http://ander.fm

Here is what he says: "I designed and constructed this MIDI-Controller myself, based on the ucapps.de hardware platform. I use it for live techno performances with Ableton Live. It's not for sale."

Some thoughts about the performance (In german)

  • 3 Pulte mit unterschiedlichen Ausrichtungen / Zweck:
  •   - 1. Mixer
  •   - 2. Fx Swooshes mit touch sensitive pads
  •   - 3. Chromatic Recording
